Appearance
Color: Heartwood is light tan to dark brown; sapwood is creamy white. Similar in appearance to white oak, but frequently more yellow.
Grain: Bold, straight, moderately open grain with occasional wavy figuring. Can have strong contrast in grain in plainsawn boards.
Variations Within Species And Grades: Sometimes confused with hickory; the zone of large pores is more distinctive in ash, similar to that of red oak.
Available Thickness:
- Strip flooring is less than 3″ wide, and creates a linear effect in a room. It generally is considered “traditional” wood flooring.
Available in 1″, 1¾”, 1½”, 1⅓”, 2″, 2¼”, 2½”, 2¾” - Plank flooring is greater than 3″ wide. It is linear, like strip flooring, and evokes a casual look.
Available in 3″ or 3¼”, 4″ or 4¼”, 5″ of 5¼”, 6″ or 6¼”, 7″
Available Grades:
- No. 1 Common has a varied appearance, light and dark colors, knots, mineral streaks and wormholes.
- No. 2 Common is rustic in appearance and emphasizes all wood characteristics of the species.
- Clear wood has minimal character marks and a uniform color and appearance.
- Select wood has natural color variations and includes knots, mineral streaks, and other natural characteristics.
Available Cuts:
- Plainsawn is the most common cut. Characteristics include a varied grain appearance.
- Quartersawn is more expensive than plainsawn. Characteristics include a uniform grain appearance with ray flecks. Ray flecks give the wood a shimmering flake effect.
- Riftsawn is more expensive than plainsawn. Characteristics are similar to quartersawn without the ray flecks.
- Livesawn is a combination of plainsawn, quartersawn and riftsawn.
Available Styles:
